Everett boys, Cascade girls win to split Battle of Broadway

EVERETT — Twenty-four hours after suffering a close non-league loss to Squalicum, Everett needed to turn around and get up for an emotional game against its city rival.

Not an easy challenge to meet, especially facing the reigning Wesco 4A champions.

The Seagulls showcased their depth and several players made big-play cameos as Everett held off Cascade late to earn a 66-59 non-conference win Friday night at Everett Community College.

The win snapped a small streak of back-to-back losses against Cascade, and plenty of Seagulls play prominent roles in this year’s chapter of the annual rivalry game.

Senior forward Louis Davis scored a team-high 18 points to go with eight rebounds, Byron Lewellen had 11 points and a game-high nine rebounds, Desmond Burton scored 11 points and Nathan Tuck’s 10 gave Everett four players in double figures. All of Tuck’s 10 points came during the second quarter.

Cascade senior guard D’Andre Bryant poured in a game-high 24 points — 14 of those coming during a furious fourth-quarter comeback attempt. Alex Stewart finished with 11 points — nine of which came from three triples — and Trevon Blackmon and Muhammad Kolly each scored nine for a Bruins team that played all 13 players on their roster.

Neither team gained a major advantage during a first half that featured six lead changes. Everett took the biggest lead of the half in the second quarter when a Tuck 3-pointer with 3 seconds before halftime gave the Seagulls a 25-19 lead, but Bryant immediately answered, beating the buzzer with a full-court shot that banked off the backboard and in, pulling the Bruins to 25-22 heading into the break.

Although Cascade made a few second-half runs, Everett never relinquished its lead the rest of the way.

A 3 from Burton with 2:25 to play in the quarter extended the Seagulls’ advantage to 38-30 and a score from Elijah Ross-Rutter right before the third quarter ended gave Everett a 43-34 edge heading into the fourth.

A pair of free throws from Blackmon with 3:52 to go in the fourth cut the Seagulls’ lead to 49-44, but Everett answered again. This time the Seagulls went on a 6-0 run and effectively put the game out of reach.

Cascade 39, Everett 30

Cascade held off a late Everett rally to earn a 39-30 non-conference girls basketball win prior to the boys game Friday night at Everett Community College

A basket by Everett’s Siena Utt trimmed Cascade’s lead to 32-30 with 2:45 to play in the fourth quarter, but Bruins center Caitlyn Phillips scored five critical points down the stretch to preserve the win.

Cascade was led by Kharial Clark’s team-high 12 points, and Jessica Welch added eight. Everett’s Kate Pohland led the Seagulls with 11 points.
