Everett boys’ depth wins track meet

SHORELINE – Second place really is almost as good as first.

Elizabeth Armstrong / The Herald

Mariner’s Dak Riek (right) edges Everett’s Axel Stankovsky to win the 1,600-meter race in a Wesco South meet Thursday.

The Everett boys track team proved that to be the case Thursday afternoon. Despite winning just five of the 17 events, the Seagulls garnered 11 second-place finishes to give them enough points for a team victory in the four-team Wesco South meet held at Shoreline Stadium.

The Seagulls finished with 114 points, well ahead of Shorecrest (60), Mariner (57) and Mountlake Terrace (32).

Multiple-event winners included Everett’s Rendel Jones, who won both the long jump and triple jump, and Spencer Warfield, who took the discus and shot put.

Mariner’s Dak Riek won both long-distance runs, with a time of 4 minutes, 36.8 seconds in the 1600-meter and 9:49.7 in the 3200.

The girls meet ended in a dead heat, with Everett and Shorecrest each racking up 91 points. Mountlake Terrace was third with 57 and Mariner fourth with 19.

Natalya Boyko won both the 800-meter (2 minutes, 39.52 seconds) and 3200-meter (13:29) to notch Mariner’s just two first places showings.

Shorecrest’s Cora Speidel was the other double-winner, nabbing first in the long jump (16 feet, 3.75 inches) and triple jump (33-9.25).
