EVERETT -They lifted the frost warning in the second half, but the thaw was not enough to spring the Everett Seagulls past the Jackson Timberwolves Friday night.
Cold shooting, early turnovers and the stout Jackson defense put Everett in a 19-point first half hole and the visiting Timberwolves went on to register a 50-38 Western Conference South Division victory.
“We did a pretty good job with our press in the first half,” Jackson coach Julie Iverson said. “I think our quickness hurt them.”
Jackson’s Jessica Shadle led the Timberwolves with 15 points and 10 rebounds, including five on the offensive end.
“She’s so strong and posts up so well,” Iverson said.
Five players scored as the Timberwolves jumped out to an 11-0 lead. Everett did not get on the scoreboard until Emily Olson scooped in a nifty baseline bucket with 1:38 remaining in the first quarter.
Shadle, Catherine Baller, and the perfect free throw shooting of Emilee Eisinger helped Jackson build its lead in the second quarter. Both teams endured a scoring drought of four minutes before Alex Hardy made a late steal and drove the length of the floor before dishing the ball to Shadle for a layin that made it 25-6 at halftime.
Andrea Jones scored eight of her 12 points in the third quarter while Baller and sisters Carissa and Carli McClenahan bedeviled the Seagulls in the backcourt throughout the game with their swarming defense.
Led by Olson, Everett found its shooting touch in the second half and, after trailing by 22 early in the fourth quarter, made a spirited 19-9 run to close out the game.
“I’m pleased they didn’t get down after the first half,” Everett coach Tara Tri said.
Olson was a workhorse for the Seagulls with her 14 points, seven rebounds and five steals.
“We did well in the second half to overcome adversity,” Olson said. “Hopefully that will continue.”
Janelle Hill hit a pair of second half 3-point baskets and contributed 10 points for Everett. Rachel Crossen had six rebounds to go along with her six points.
Everett’s late run drew Iverson’s ire.
“Our kids need to learn to continue the intensity and the focus throughout the game,” Iverson said.
