ARLINGTON – The road to state got a bit longer for the Everett girls basketball team Thursday night.
Despite senior guard Erika Hornyak’s game-high 27 points, the Seagulls fell to the Ferndale Golden Eagles 60-47 in a Class 3A District 1 semifinal playoff game.
Ferndale opened the game with a 6-0 spurt, but then Hornyak and teammate Lauren Hope started scoring for Everett. Hornyak and Hope – both scoring five points in the quarter – each hit a 3-pointer that were followed by back-to-back lay-ins and the first quarter ended with Everett up 10-8.
Turnovers (six) plagued the Seagulls in the second quarter and Ferndale’s Sarah Cicchitti got hot, scoring seven of her team-high 14 points in the period.
Hornyak wasn’t to be outdone, scoring eight of Everett’s nine second-quarter points – including six in the final two minutes – to go into halftime down only four, 23-19.
“Sarah played a good game tonight, (she) was aggressive offensively,” said Everett head coach Kelly McCoy about her star.
The tide began to turn on the Seagulls in the second half. Ferndale’s defense started a three-quarter court press, forcing five turnovers and leading to transition baskets. Offensively, Ferndale began looking inside. In the quarter, post players Brittany Lindsay and Carleigh Newman scored six and five points, respectively.
Lindsay finished the game with 14 points and Newman scored 11.
Cicchitti also chipped in five points – including a 3-pointer to beat the buzzer that extended the Golden Eagles lead to 41-32 entering the fourth quarter.
Hornyak opened the fourth quarter with a beautiful back-door lay-in to cut the Ferndale lead to 41-34. However, that was as close as the Seagulls would get.
Ferndale’s Taylor Bates-Erickson answered with a 3-pointer and seven of her 11 points came in the fourth quarter. And Alyssa Locker made consecutive steals and lay-ins to put the game out of reach.
“We are going to have to take care of the ball better offensively,” added McCoy, looking ahead to her team’s next game.
The Seagulls play a loser-out game against the loser of tonight’s Sedro-Woolley vs. Arlington at 6 p.m. Monday at Arlington High School.
Ferndale advanced to the district final, winner-to-state game against Meadowdale.
