Everett gets huge win over Meadowdale

EDMONDS – It was supposed to be the battle of two 4-3 teams fighting for a Wesco South playoff berth. What it ended up being was a huge win for a team that was in desperate need of one.

Andrew Skorney ran 90 yards for a touchdown on Everett’s second play of the game – two plays after Jason Siler’s 95-yard punt return was called back because of a Seagull penalty – and Everett ruined Meadowdale’s homecoming night, defeating the Mavericks 34-14 Friday at Edmonds Stadium.

The win gives Everett (5-3 in division and overall) the edge in the battle for a Wesco South playoff berth, and drops Meadowdale (4-4) to a fifth-place tie in the division.

Skorney led the Seagulls with 130 yards rushing on seven carries, and scored on runs of 90 and 14 yards. The senior also ran back a 73-yard interception that put a halt to a Meadowdale drive late in the fourth quarter.

Workhorse Justin Boyce carried 19 times for 90 yards and helped Everett compile 342 total rushing yards. Quarterback Bryce Levin was 5-for-9 with 107 yards passing, connecting with David Peoples for a 54-yard touchdown late in the first quarter.

The Seagulls proved that they are not a one-dimensional team, slowing down a Meadowdale offense that had scored 34 or more points in each of their last three games.

Everett intercepted Mavericks quarterback Matt Johnson twice in the fourth quarter, and forced three Meadowdale three-and-out possessions in the second half.

It appeared that the Mavericks might creep back into the game when they had back-to-back sacks of Levin late in the third quarter with Everett on the Meadowdale 19-yard line. Instead, the Seagulls made a defensive stop of their own, forcing a fumble that was recovered by the Mavericks and nearly intercepting a Johnson pass.

Everett faces Jackson (5-3) next week at Everett Memorial Stadium. Meadowdale faces Shorewood (1-7) at Shoreline Stadium.
