Everett goes 4-for-4 in championship bouts

EVERETT – Following a minor slipup last weekend, the Everett High Seagulls returned with a vengeance.

Everett overcame a second-place finish behind Kamiak in last week’s divisional meet Saturday during the Class 4A Western Conference District Wrestling Tournament at the Everett High gym. The host Seagulls were 4-for-4 in championship bouts and scored 136 points to finish third behind the Stanwood Spartans (150) and the Lake Stevens Vikings (199), the defending Class 4A state champions. Cascade (73) was fourth and Snohomish (64) was fifth.

The top five placers in each weight class qualified for the 4A regional tournament. The meet, which also includes wrestlers from the South Puget Sound League North Division, is Saturday at Snohomish High.

Nine Everett wrestlers advanced, including champions Tom Swankosky (119 pounds), Bryan Irwin (130), Justin Boyce (189) and Kenny Hudson (215). Irwin and Hudson both ground out one-point decisions. Irwin was tied 3-3 with Derek Carter of Lake Stevens with 25 seconds remaining but Irwin’s one-point escape maneuver with eight seconds to go was the difference.

Hudson led 4-1 after one period against Stanwood’s Bryce Thorstad, but Thorstad pulled within 6-5 with 40 seconds remaining. Behind cheers from the home crowd, Hudson locked up Thorstad and stopped him from scoring again.

Everett coach Mark Ryder said his team rose to the occasion, especially in the finals. “We didn’t really know what we were gonna get,” Ryder said, “but all four kids wrestled awesome. A lot of other coaches were surprised about that.”

“Our goal was to place in the top three,” Ryder continued. “We’re pleasantly surprised with where we’re at right now because we’re a lot closer to second (place) than I thought we’d be.”

Lake Stevens advanced a tournament-best 11 wrestlers to the regional meet. The Vikings also had four champions – Kelly Kubec (112), Lester Brown (135), Blake Tate (152) and Clint Osborn (275) – but they were 0-2 in finals against Everett.

“We qualified the guys through that we needed to,” Lake Stevens coach Brent Barnes said.

Barnes said of Everett, “They did a good job. They’ve got some tough kids.”

Brown, the 2004 4A state champion at 125 pounds, racked up three pins during another impressive outing for Lake Stevens. He was the only wrestler to earn a pin in a final.

“I just try to wrestle every match like I’m getting ready for the state finals,” Brown said. “Every match, whether it’s easy or not, I still wrestle the same…as hard as I can.”

Stanwood moved nine wrestlers to regionals and had a meet-high five second-place finishers. Stanwood coach Tom Wilfong said he thought his team would have more champions but he was still pleased overall.

Other champions included Cascade’s Randall Walt (103) and Jonny Gilbertson (125), who improved his record to 34-0. Mountlake Terrace’s Casey Finnicum (160) and Marysville-Pilchuck’s Alex Hopkins (140) also placed first.
