Parker Burns is headed to the NCAA Wrestling Championships — and he won’t need a ticket to get in.
Burns, a junior at Campbell University, won the 197-pound division at the NCAA East Regional wrestling meet held March 6 in Millersville, Pa.
Burns, a graduate of Everett High School, upset the No. 1 seed en route to the championship match, where he defeated Justin Buchanan of Duquesne 7-1.
The regional title earned Burns a slot in the NCAA championships, which open Thursday in Omaha, Neb. He is the first Campbell wrestler to qualify for nationals in eight years.
“It feels amazing right now,” Burns said on the school’s athletic Web site. “It’s always been my goal to get to nationals. Now instead of just getting to see the East Coast schools, I’ll be at elbows with some of the best wrestlers in the nation. It’s something that I’m really looking forward to.”
Burns’ first match is scheduled for Thursday morning against seventh-seeded Anthony Biondo of Michigan.
Campbell University is located in Buies Creek, N.C.
Snohomish is ‘Best of the West’
The Snohomish Division I varsity girls lacrosse team won the Best of the West Tournament held March 5-7 in Las Vegas.
Snohomish posted a 7-0 record, including a 10-9 victory over Pinnacle of Arizona in the championship game. Midfielder Shelby Barkhouse scored the game-winning goal on a penalty shot with 20 seconds remaining to give Snohomish its second Best of the West title in three years.
For the tournament, Snohomish outscored its opponents 75-18.
Snohomish attacker Meaghan Hess led all scorers with 41 points (31 goals and 10 assists). Freshman goalkeeper Morgan Miller recorded her first varsity shutout in a 13-0 victory over Murray of Utah in pool play.
In addition to Barkhouse, Hess and Miller, the Snohomish roster included Stephanie Lamphere, Kaya Reilly, Amanda Hultz, Rebeka Price, Taylor Morgan, Katarina Rentko, Emily Hale, Sarah Clogston, Megan Weyrauch, Lauren Francois, Emily Dalrymple, Caris Ristoff, Chelsea Hultz, Jamie Maitteo, Jahmie Day, Maje Wong and Bailey Cheney. The team was coached by Craig Hess and assistant Brian Hultz.
WAC honors Kloke
University of Idaho women’s basketball player Rachele Kloke was named last week to the All-Western Athletic Conference second team.
Kloke, a 5-foot-11 junior guard/post, ranked fourth in WAC play in scoring at 17.0 points per game and shot 45.5 percent from the field. She also averaged 4.9 rebounds per game.
Kloke is a graduate of Stanwood High School.
Everett CC player honored
Mary Ochiltree of Everett Community College was named to the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges All-Tournament second team after leading Everett to a seventh-place finish last week. In four tournament games, Ochiltree averaged 16.8 points and 7.3 rebounds.
On Sunday, Karissa Tri and Ashley Housden of Everett, along with Whitney Anderson of Edmonds, played in the NWAACC Sophomore All-Star Series. The trio played for the North team, which beat the West All-Stars 74-68.
Anderson scored 12 points, Housden added four points and 15 rebounds, and Tri scored three points.
Meadowdale claims title
The Meadowdale Mavericks seventh-grade boys basketball team won both the Wesco AAU Feeder League regular-season and tournament championships. The Mavs finished the 2009-10 season with a 21-1 record.
They defeated Marysville in the tournament championship game.
The Meadowdale team included Aidan O’Neill, Garrett Walsh, Charlie White, Elliot Reece, Griffin Over, Caleb Tingstad, Brett Schafer, Jacob Hunnewell, Kenley Ackerman, Reid Wilson, Rory Spillum and Landon Hopkins, The team was coached by Kevin O’Neill and his assistant, Rich O’Neill.
Leading Edge wins
Lilly KaiserSchmidt of Everett-based Leading Edge Gymnastics won a pair of all-around titles in recent competitions. KaiserSchmidt finished first in the Level 7 Junior 13-14 Division at the 2010 Long Beach Open held Feb. 26-28 in Southern California. She placed first on the beam and floor exercises en route to an all-around score of 37.050.
KaiserSchmidt, from Clinton, also won the all-around in her division the following week at the Boise State University Invitational with a score of 37.000.
KaiserSchmidt was one of seven all-round winners for Leading Edge at the Boise meet. The others included:
Level 4 — Avana Henry of Bothell (Junior 1 Division), Danielle Toman of Everett (Child 3 Division) and Ryzele Lagdaan of Snohomish (Child 2 Division).
Level 5 — Taylor Eastwood of Mill Creek (Child 2 Division).
Level 9 — Kendall Watts of Mount Vernon (Junior 1 Division).
Level 10 — Kailie Ponto of Kenmore (Senior 2 Division).
