If this were baseball, he’d be batting 1.000.
Thirteen-year-old Jonathan Chapman of Everett, a member of the Leading Edge boys gymnastics team, earned the all-around title in Class 5 competition at the Washington Open on Saturday at the University of Washington.
Jonathan took first in three of six events en route to a 42.80 all-around. He turned in a 9.2 in the vault, 6.60 on the parallel bars and 8.0 on the high bars.
“He’s been at it for a long time,” coach David Bath said. “He works real hard and it’s just really cool.”
Jonathan finished no worse than third in any of the individual events.
“Everything came together,” Bath said. “It’s pretty rare for someone to do all six events up to their full capability and he did just that. It’s like a hitter going 6-for-6 in baseball.”
Other members of the Leading Edge also fared well, including Aaron Jensen, 11 of Lake Stevens. Competing in Class 6, Aaron’s 9.6 vault, 8.1 parallel and 9.20 high bar scores keyed a third-place finish in the all-around with a 49.30.
Also in Class 6 was Christopher Sabin, 11 of Mountlake Terrace, who placed second on the pommel horse.
In Class 7 competition, Cameron Chielens and Samuel Dean, both 10 of Everett, had impressive debuts. Cameron won the vault with a 9.30 while Samuel took top honors with a 9.40 on the rings.
“We had a new group of kids and they all did a really good job,” Bath said.
