Everett holds its own

EVERETT – The perennially playoff-bound Meadowdale Mavericks came to Everett Tuesday night and found themselves in a battle to remain undefeated.

After the dust cleared, Meadowdale had wrestled a 3-1 non-league girls soccer win away from the feisty Seagulls.

Everett got the first goal in the 18th minute.

“We scored first on a beautiful cross from Nichole (Robinson) to Brittany (McMullen),” said Seagulls coach Kosta Pitharoulis.

Meadowdale didn’t give up and Lauren Thompson tied the score in the 28th minute off a corner kick from Mari Tasche.

“Meadowdale’s experienced and they fought back,” Pitharoulis said. “They really showed their experience and poise.”

He said Everett focused on stopping the Mavericks’ Ashley Correa, who has “scored a bunch of goals for them.

“We were able to shut her down and Monika (Gruszecki) really stepped up and did damage.”

With Correa unable to find open looks at the goal, the Mavericks turned to Gruszecki, who scored two second-half goals to win the game.

“That’s our first loss,” Pitharoulis said. “In the South they don’t count yet, so it’s definitely an experience, playing one of the perennial powerhouses in the league.”

Pitharoulis said Everett’s recent girls soccer history is that the Seagulls win one or two games each season. He said to win three to begin the season is huge for the team.

“This gave us a measuring tool,” he said. “Because Meadowdale is usually in the playoffs and very competitive.”

He said the Seagulls are looking forward to playing the Mavericks again later in the season when the games count.

“We’re treading new waters and it’s very encouraging,” Pitharoulis said. “It’s a great new group of girls with a good attitude.”
