Everett knocks off Shorecrest for 3A district title

FERNDALE – In a match where both teams showed up to play, the Everett volleyball team came out on top, defeating Shorecrest 3-2 (25-19, 25-20, 20-25, 22-25, 15-13) in the 3A District 1 title match at Ferndale High School.

The loss was Shorecrest’s first of the season.

“They are a strong, skilled team,” Everett volleyball coach Heather Burglund said, “but our team really stepped it up.

“We utilized our strong serving, tough hitting, and amazing defense!”

The Seagulls were led by senior Maureen Frauenholtz, who led the charge with 24 kills, 28 digs and four aces. Erika Hornyak had 14 kills and 25 digs, Jacqui Bayne had 47 assists and nine digs, and Erin Vance added nine kills for Everett (11-6).

Shorecrest (16-1), which defeated Everett earlier in the season, found itself down 2-0 going into the third set. It fought back,

winning the next two, to force the deciding fifth set.

“We just made fewer errors,” Burglund said of the match. Everett plays Friday at the Toyota Center in Kennewick against Camas at 1:30pm.

The news was not all bad for Shorecrest. After being defeated in the title game, they played Mount Vernon in a match to determine who would be the District 1 No. 2 seed. There was no hangover from the previous game, as the Scots prevailed winning 3-0 (25-15, 25-17, 25-20) to claim the state berth.

2A District 1 Championship: At Blaine, Archbishop Murphy fell to Burlington-Edison 3-1 (25-15, 18-25, 25-15, 25-19) in the 2A District 1 championship match at Blaine High School. Both teams advance to state. Archbishop Murphy (10-1 overall), which will be the No. 2 seed, was lead by Alyssa Smith with eight kills and three blocks, Patti Reeves with 31 assists, Rachel Shober, who had six kills, two blocks, and two aces, and Ashley Broadwell, who added four kills, two blocks, and four aces. Lynden edged out Sehome 3-2 (25-18, 26-28, 30-28, 20-25, 15-8) in a back-and-forth third-place game, securing the No. 3 seed for the state tournament. Sehome will also go to state seeded fourth.

Sehome 3, Cedarcrest 2: At Blaine, Kristen McKinlay recorded 13 kills and three blocks but the Red Wolves fell to Sehome in five games (25-19, 19-25, 25-19, 17-25, 12-15) in a winner-to-state, loser out match at Blaine High School. Amber Shields added 29 assists and three blocks to help Cedarcrest. Additional help came from Kaylen McRae (12 kills, 10 digs), Ashley Owen(29 digs), and Megan Kendig (21 digs).

1A Bi-District Tournament: At Shoreline, King’s defeated Cascade Christian 3-0 (25-16, 25-11, 25-19) to win the 1A Bi-District Tournament and claim the No. 1 seed heading into the state playoffs. King’s (5-6 overall) playing on its home court, was led by Kailey Trautmann with 16 kills, three aces, and 12 digs; Bianca Rowland, who had 10 kills, and Kimberly Mayhle who added eight kills and 11 digs. Lynden Christian defeated Nooksack Valley 3-0 (25-16, 25-19, 25-18) to earn a trip to state as the No. 3 seed.

Tri-District 2B Tournament: At Edmonds, the La Conner girls showed more domination, as they took home the Tri-District championship at Edmonds-Woodway High School. The Braves received a two-round bye for taking one of the two No. 1 seeds into the tournament, opening up play in the semifinals. A early afternoon sweep of Evergreen Lutheran (25-10, 25-15, 25-12) put La Conner into the championship against Life Christian, which had defeated Rainier Christian in the other semifinal. The Braves once again brought out the brooms, winning 25-18, 25-12, 25-18. Darrington was eliminated by Shoreline Christian, which was then eliminated by Rainier Christian in a winner-to-state, loser out match. La Conner is ranked No. 1 in the state by the Washington State Coaches Association and have lost once all year, falling to 3A Bainbridge 2-1. Coincidentally, those are the only two games the Braves have dropped all year as they have swept all their other opponents 3-0.

1B Bi-District playoffs: At Sequim, Lopez Island swept Crescent 26-24, 25-23, 25-23 to win the championship and first seed to state. Crescent received the second seed. Neah Bay survived consolation play to take the third seed. Neah Bay eliminated Master’s Touch and North Sound Christian both by 3-1 margins. Crescent sent North Sound into consolation play with a 3-0 semifinal win. Lopez defeated Neah Bay 3-0 in the other semi.
