Everett meeting high expectations

EVERETT – High expectations.

That’s what the Everett Seagulls volleyball team are facing this season after returning 11 seniors from a team that finished 15-3 and won the Wesco South a year ago.

So far so good.

The Seagulls defeated Mount Vernon, 25-22, 25-14, 25-9, in a non-conference match Tuesday night, running their record to 2-0.

Despite the expectations, Everett head coach Heather Burgland said the girls have kept focused.

“Basically they’re not talking about the end result and taking every game one at a time,” Burgland said.

Jennifer Luatua had 13 kills and 16 digs for Everett and Dusty Bryson added 25 digs.

Burgland said Mount Vernon is a “very scrappy and young team that has the potential to be very good.”

Everett’s Nicole Barhanovich had 33 assists and now has 55 assists in two matches.

Mount Vernon (2-1 overall) was led by Tara Cunningham’s eight kills and five digs and Molly Taylor added four blocks and eight digs.

Shorecrest 3, Stanwood 0: At Shoreline, the Scots (3-0 overall) won three straight games, 25-10, 25-12, 25-20, to take the non-league match. Becky Scherer had 12 kills and 10 digs and Anna Herold added 26 assists and seven digs for Shorecrest. Amanda Allred had 15 assists for Stanwood (1-2).

Snohomish 3, Mariner 0: At Everett, Ashley Barnet had 36 assists, Daesha Henderson had six kills and seven blocks, and Whitney Nichols had eight kills to lead undefeated Snohomish (3-0) to the non-league victory, 25-6, 25-14, 25-9. Heather Berg (five kills, two blocks) and Janet Schumann (four kills, two blocks) led Mariner (0-3).

Lake Stevens 3, Shorewood 1: At Shoreline, Megan Watkins led Lake Stevens (1-2 overall) to the 21-25, 27-25, 25-20, 25-19 non-conference victory with 10 kills. Natalie Soule had eight kills for Shorewood (1-2).

Lynnwood 3, Monroe 0: At Lynnwood, Heather McCartney finished with 30 assists and Daylene Wilkie added 10 kills as Lynnwood (2-0) swept Monroe, 25-15, 25-17, 25-19. Monroe (1-2) was led by sisters Sarah and Whitney Mueller. Sarah finished with six kills and Whitney had five kills and 14 assists.

Meadowdale 3, Arlington 1: At Meadowdale, Tessa Eberth had 18 assists and six kills to lead Meadowdale (1-2 overall) to its first victory of the season, 26-24, 25-22, 12-25, 25-21. Caitlyn Rohrbach had 11 digs and eight kills for the Mavericks and Krystal Craig added 10 kills. Arlington (0-3) was led by Kari O’Sullivan’s 15 kills and eight blocks and Keesha Carpentar’s 20 assists.

Kamiak 3, Cascade 0: At Mukilteo, Stephanie Lau (13 kills) and Elisabeth Smith (13 assists) helped lead Kamiak (1-1 overall) to a 25-11, 25-23, 25-23 non-conference victory. Brittany Townsend had nine assists for Cascade (0-2).

Oak Harbor 3, Mountlake Terrace 0: At Mountlake Terrace, Ashley Kingma paced Oak Harbor’s non-league victory with 18 assists and four aces. Jennifer Muzzall (seven kills, five blocks) and Heidi McNeill (seven kills, seven blocks) also starred for the Wildcats (3-0 overall), who won by game scores of 25-9, 26-24 and 31-29. Jessica Schrock had six kills and four blocks, Nicole Berlin added five kills and Rene Noeun smacked three aces for Mountlake Terrace (1-1).

King’s 3, Sultan 0: At Sultan, senior Emily Martin led the Knights to the 25-9, 25-12, 25-17 Cascade Conference victory with three aces, three kills and seven digs. Jamie Hartman had four aces and eight digs for King’s (1-0 league, 2-0 overall). Sultan is 0-2, 0-3.

Archbishop Murphy 3, Granite Falls 2: At Everett, Patti Reeves had five aces and 16 assists, Ashley Werner had seven kills and 23 assists, Kaitlin Hoban had 11 kills and Lisa Coate had 13 kills to lead Archbishop Murphy (1-0 league, 2-0 overall) to the 25-16, 21-25, 25-22, 24-26, 15-11 Cascade Conference victory. Michaela Dudder had nine kills, Julie Alexander had 22 assists and served 17-for-19, Julie Saltmarsh had six kills and five blocks and Diana Haug served 14-for-15 and had seven kills to lead Granite Falls (0-1, 0-3).

Cedarcrest 3, Lakewood 0: At Lakewood, Kristine Wilen led the Wolves to the 25-6, 26-13, 25-16 Cascade Conference victory with nine aces, one assist, four kills and three digs. Junior Britney Carlson contributed three aces, 20 assists and four digs for Cedarcrest. Laurel Hansen led Lakewood with three blocks. Cedarcrest improved to 1-0 in league and 2-1 overall. Lakewood is 0-1, 0-2.

Skykomish 3, Lummi 0: At Skykomish, Colleen Carroll was 13-for-13 on serves and Frances Sweeters ripped five aces as Skykomish (3-0 overall) won the non-league match 25-8, 25-6, 25-13.

Darrington 3, Chief Leschi 0: At Darrington, Lindsey Bryson had 14 assists and seven aces, Dana Smith served 13-for-13 and Reiley Wicken served 12-for-12 to lead Darrington (3-3 overall) to a 25-20, 25-14, 25-11 non-league win.

King’s West 3, Snohomish County Christian 1: At Mountlake Terrace, King’s West won its first match of the season, 11-25, 25-22, 25-23, 25-16, over Snohomish County Christian (1-3 overall). Megan Smaalden led King’s West with eight kills. Freshman Megan Crobsy contributed six aces and 11 assists for Snohomish County Christian.

Shoreline Christian 3, Summit 2: At Shoreline, Julia Dekoekkoek had 12 kills and three aces and Nikki Hammon had 13 digs to lift Shoreline Christian (3-0 overall) to the non-conference victory. The Crusaders trailed 2-1 but rallied to win 8-25, 25-18, 14-25, 25-11, 15-5.
