Everett runs streak to six wins in a row

SHORELINE – Not too long ago, Everett found itself smack in the middle of the Wesco South Conference with an unimpressive 4-4 league record.

After Thursday’s 2-1 win over co-champion Shorecrest, the Seagulls stretched their winning streak to six and have won nine out of their last 10 games.

“(This win) felt good against the league champs (Shorecrest is 14-4 in league and 14-4 overall),” said Everett coach Kyle Peacock.

Early errors allowed Shorecrest to score in the first inning. “I was proud of the girls,” Peacock said. “They didn’t let (the first inning errors) affect them for the rest of the game.”

“It was a quick game,” Shorecrest coach Kristie Ogelsby said. “Both teams played good defense, made pretty good contact. We just didn’t get the hits when we needed them.”

A double by Everett’s Alyssa Pappas in the top of the seventh spurred on the Seagulls, who followed up with a pair of singles to give Everett the win.

If the end-of-the-regular-season win gives the Seagulls momentum for the playoffs, Shorecrest feels just as motivated by the loss.

“We’ll be bouncing back for the playoffs,” Ogelsby said. “We had a successful season, we won league.”

4A District 1 Tournament: Just like the Postal Service, Kamiak’s Christa Goldie overcame wind, rain and wet conditions to post an 80 for the lead after the first round. Her teammate, Rachel Casselman finished second at 83. M-P’s Katlin Parker stands alone in third (86) and Mount Vernon’s Jessica Poling (89) is fourth. Kamiak’s Liz Schneider, who made the cut, said an hour rain delay made for “unexpected conditions. The greens were slow and wet.” Fourty-two girls made the cut and will play the second round on Tuesday, May 24, at Sudden Valley Golf Club, outside Bellingham.
