Everett runs to first victory

EDMONDS – When in doubt, run the football.

It’s a mundane but effective scheme, one that the Everett Seagulls used to gain their first victory of the season Friday night.

With methodical grace, Everett defeated Meadowdale 45-20 in Western Conference Southern Division play at Edmonds Stadium.

The Seagulls (1-1 in the Western Conference South Division and overall), who rushed for an impressive 317 yards, used an equal balance of power and finesse to dissect an undersized Meadowdale defense.

Despite falling behind 7-0 early in the first quarter, Everett found redemption in 6-foot, 190-pound bruiser Chris Daoust, who scored the Seagulls’ first two touchdowns.

“I have to give all the credit to our line,” Daoust said. “We did everything we were supposed to and it showed.”

J.D. Mowrer scored from three yards out with 1:33 remaining in the first half to give Everett an 18-7 lead.

T.J. Gaffney and Lee Smith, who galloped for 124 yards, punished Meadowdale (0-2) with raw speed, combining for a mind-numbing 256 yards.

Gaffney’s elusive and breakaway ability came through on a 51-yard touchdown run in the third quarter to give the Seagulls a 24-13 lead. Gaffney, who made an end zone interception, rushed for 132 yards on 12 carries. His brother, Tory, broke the norm by catching a rare pass from quarterback John Orbnin. The pass and catch, which occurred less than a minute after Everett’s fourth touchdown, went for 33 yards, giving Everett a 31-13 lead.

Meadowdale added a late touchdown on a Ryan Johnson 6-yard run in the fourth quarter. He gave the Mavericks their only lead in the first quarter when he scored from 3 yards out.
