Everett wins meet featuring Wesco’s top throwers

EVERETT — Athletes converged from North and South for an old-fashioned throwdown Thursday. When the flying objects settled, Everett emerged victorious.

"Most of the best throwers (in the Western Conference) were at this meet," said Everett coach Doug Hall, whose team excelled in the throwing events en route to scoring 120.5 points and running away with a Western Conference boys track meet at Everett Memorial Stadium. Lake Stevens was second with 64.5 points, followed by Stanwood (41) and Oak Harbor (38).

Everett’s Jake Stevens won the javelin (169 feet, 10 inches) and the discus (163-4), setting a personal record in the latter. Stevens was second to Clint Osborn of Lake Stevens (52-0.5) in the shot put. Osborn was third in the discus (134-9).

Hall and the Seagulls had looked forward to the meet, which Hall said matched the top throwers from the Wesco North against the top throwers from the Wesco South.

"We have a lot of respect for the Lake Stevens throws team," Hall said. "They’ve been dominant for a while here and we competed very well."

Hall also said he was excited to see several Everett sprinters recovering well from injuries. Tadash Watson and brothers Mike and Justin Hudson are all fighting back from physical setbacks. Thursday they performed closer to what Hall believes they are capable of. Watson won the 100- and 200-meter dashes and, along with Justin Hudson, ran a leg for Everett’s first-place 1,600 relay team.
