EVERETT – The Everett wrestling team is off to a good start in the Western Conference South Division.

The Seagulls recorded six consecutive victories to start their meet Thursday against Shorecrest, including five by pinfall, and went on to post a 41-22 victory to improve to 2-0 in the division.

“We’re doing all right,” Everett coach Brien Elliott said. “We’re young, and the kids just need to get some confidence.”

The match of the evening was at 130 pounds. Everett’s Zach Ordona squared off against Antonio Castillo of Shorecrest.

“Ordona wrestled a great match,” said Elliott, of Ordona’s 12-4 decision victory. “He wrestled up a weight for us and did a good job to beat a kid who I don’t think had lost this year.”

Another Everett highlight on the evening was that three members of the Irwin family, junior Tim and identical twin freshmen Brian and Michael, wrestled together for the first time. Tim and Michael both earned victories at 119 and 135 pounds, respectively. Brian Irwin wasn’t as lucky, as he fell victim to a 6-3 decision at the hands of Shorecrest’s Cameron Nakota in the 125-pound weight class.

Mariner 36, Shorewood 31: Kyle Castle, a state alternate from last season’s Mariner team, pinned his opponent in 3 minutes, 31 seconds. “It was a good win for Michael Bell and Trenton Tuiasosopo. They both did a good job tonight,” Mariner assistant coach Michael Braaten said. The match of the night was turned in by Jason Murray, who beat Colin Ferris of Shorewood 4-2 in overtime.
