Forty years ago, there were no state playoffs. Football teams were declared state champions by virtue of their regular season prowess.
The last such Everett High School team to be so recognized was the 1961 team, who will be honored at halftime of Friday’s Homecoming game vs. Jackson at Everett Memorial Stadium.
The ‘61 Seagulls were undefeated, winning nine games by a combined score of 228-31. They shut out four opponents and held the other five to seven points or less.
Current Everett coach Paul Lawrence was one of the team’s captains. He played center on offense and defensive tackle on defense, and was typical of his teammates, said then coach Bill Dunn.
“It was a good bunch,” Dunn said. “(Lawrence) was an excellent leader, very intelligent, coachable. He was aggressive and very tough.”
