SPOKANE – The Spokane Chiefs continue to have the Everett Silvertips’ number.

Michael Grabner scored a hat trick, and the Chiefs defeated the Silvertips 5-2 Friday night.

Everett (5-1-0-1) has lost just twice this season, both coming against Spokane. The loss was also the Silvertips’ first in regulation.

Mike Reddington and Chris Langkow also scored and Kevin Armstrong made 25 saves in goal for Spokane (4-2-1-0), which overwhelmed Everett with its speed.

Zach Hamill and Moses Gutierrez scored, Peter Mueller had two assists, and Leland Irving made 32 saves in net for Everett.

Spokane took advantage of Everett penalties and took control of the game with two goals in two minutes late in the second period, turning a 2-1 deficit into a 3-2 lead.

First, Reddington blasted a shot from the point past Irving at 14 minutes, 40 seconds. Then 2:07 later, Spokane had a five-on-three advantage when Langkow scored a scramble goal, giving the Chiefs a 3-2 lead. It was the first WHL goals for both Reddington and Langkow.

Grabner secured the victory with two goals in the third period, scoring on a breakaway at 13:12 and into an empty net at 19:43.

Everett found itself playing from behind for the first time this season as Spokane opened the scoring 7:30 into the game. A Chiefs penalty had just expired when Spokane went on the attack, and Grabner was able to put in a rebound to make it 1-0.

The Tips got a series of five-on-three power plays at the end of the first and capitalized at 18:01. Mueller closed on goal and fed Hamill, who put a shot past Armstrong to make it 1-1. The goal gave Hamill a point in all seven of Everett’s games this season.

Everett took the lead 3:11 into the second period. Mueller held off the Spokane defense and flipped a shot toward goal that Gutierrez tipped in, giving the Tips a 2-1 lead. However, it was all Spokane from there.

Everett defensemen Taylor Ellington and Eric Doyle both returned to the lineup from injuries. Seventeen-year-old Jesse Burt made his WHL debut for Everett, replacing right wing Brady Calla, who has the flu.
