HONOLULU — Former Washington assistant coach Chris Tormey, let go in the overhaul of the Huskies’ football team, is the new special teams coach at Hawaii.
Tormey, who has served as head coach at Idaho and Nevada, will also assist with the Warriors’ defensive secondary.
Tormey served as linebackers coach and recruiting coordinator for the Huskies for five years, but new head coach Steve Sarkisian said in December he would not be retained. Washington was the only winless major college team in the country last season.
Hawaii coach Greg McMackin says Tormey has extensive experience and is one of the best recruiters in the country. Tormey played linebacker under McMackin at Idaho in the late 1970s.
He fills the vacancy left when Ikaika Malloe who accepted the defensive coordinator job at Yale.
