DUPONT — Jacob Koppenberg of Everett shot a 1-under-par 71 Monday and is tied for ninth after the first round of stroke-play qualifying at the Pacific Northwest Golf Association’s Men’s Amateur Championship at The Home Course.
Sam Cyr from Makawao, Hawaii, was the first-day leader with a 5-under 67.
The tournament continues today with a second and final round of qualifying, after which the top 64 golfers will begin a match-play elimination.
Other area players at the tournament include Brian Barhanovich of Everett, who had a 2-over 74, Kris Jackson of Snohomish and Craig Crawford of Stanwood at 3-over 75, Mukilteo’s Mark Strickland and Monroe’s Matt Epstein at 4-over 76, and Mukilteo’s Reid Martin at 5-over 77.
California woman leads qualifying: Sara Ovadia from Santa Barbara, Calif., who just completed her freshman year as a student-athlete at New York’s Columbia University, shot an even-par 72 for the early qualifying lead at the PNGA’s Women’s Amateur Championship at Arrowhead Golf Club in Mollala, Ore. Ovadia leads Claire Rachor of Bellingham by one stroke.
A second round of stroke-play qualifying is scheduled for today, after which the top 32 golfers will advance to match play.
