The Seattle Mountaineers announced Tuesday they are leaving the National Athletic Basketball League, effective immediately.
The NABL, in a statement released late Tuesday , said “the league has removed the Seattle ownership and have taken over ownership of the greater Seattle region. The Seattle team will not be participating in the upcoming post season and the Seattle players are given an unconditional release and can be picked up by any other NABL team.”
The Mountaineers were scheduled to play the Snohomish County Explosion on Sunday in the regular-season finale for the Monroe-based Explosion.
“We will have a game Sunday and will be filling this with another team from the NABL,” Explosion coach Nathan Mumm said in an e-mail.
The six-team NABL is in its first season. The league began play in late March with three franchises in Washington (Seattle, Tacoma and Snohomish County) and three in Oregon (Portland, Salem and Tualatin).
“The NABL was not a good fit for our organization and we need to go in another direction,” Seattle team president Don Sims said in a press release. “We will concentrate our energy and resources towards our upcoming ABA (American Basketball Association) season. I wish the NABL well.”
