ENSTONE, England — The Renault Formula One team distanced itself from speculation Wednesday suggesting that it is considering the FIA’s offer of standardized engines to help cut costs.
Renault said that reports suggesting that it was interested in the ruling body’s offer of a low-cost Cosworth engine from the 2010 season were inaccurate.
Five teams were rumored to be interested in the engines, but Renault denied that it was set to break ranks with the Formula One Teams Association (FOTA) by considering the option alongside independent teams Williams, Force India, Red Bull Racing and Toro Rosso.
“Following speculation that appeared this morning in the Italian press, the ING Renault F1 Team would like to state that the positions of the Team and Renault are in complete accordance to those of the FOTA,” Renault said in a statement.
Just days after the cash-strapped Honda team announced its withdrawal from F1, FIA has said it had received a very positive reaction to its proposal of standard engines as a cost-cutting measure.
