SULTAN – A state champion, a supporting cast of standouts and a nagging foot injury all helped in keeping South Whidbey’s Brandon Bilyeu tucked away in the shadows.
But now that graduation has taken away three of South Whidbey’s long distance stars along with last year’s 800- and 1,600-meter state champion, Braden Giswold, Bilyeu has finally been able to emerge.
Add that to his ability to run pain free, and you get a dual-winner during Friday’s 2A Northwest District track and field meet held in Sultan.
Bilyeu advanced to next week’s state meet after finishing first in the 800 with a time of 1:59.59 and first in the 1,600 (4:25.25).
“This is very good for him,” South Whidbey coach Doug Fulton said. “He’s been in the shadow of our past runners. And he is such a hard worker he deserves to win.”
Lakewood senior Cameron Hartman qualified for two state events after finishing second in the 100 (11.20) and third in the 400 (50.10). His counterpart and season-long foe, South Whidbey sophomore Nick Plastino, who won the 100, also qualified for two events, the 100 and 200.
Mount Baker’s Mike Rawlins stood out amongst the 168 competitors from nine schools with victories in the 200, 400, high jump and long jump.
