Falcons soar over Sehome

LAKEWOOD — The South Whidbey girls cross country team found out where it stands against some of the best teams in the state Saturday afternoon.

And the best for that matter.

The Falcons upset No. 1-ranked Sehome to take the team title by five points at the 24th Annual Hole-in-the-Wall Invitational at Lakewood High School. The Mariners are No. 1 in the Washington State Cross County Coaches Association Class 2A poll.

South Whidbey (2A No. 3) used packed running to place its top five runners in the top 21, with Erica Johnson leading the charge with a 12th-place finish. The Falcons Caroline Habel was 14th, Courtney Bosman was 16th, Chantal White 20th and Cassie Bosman rounded out South Whidbey’s scoring with a 21st-place finish.

Sehome’s top two runners flexed their power finishing in the top four. The Mariners’ Annie Moore ran away with the individual title and Mimi Krieger was fourth. Sehome’s other top runners finished behind the packed Falcons in 24th, 25th and 34th.

“Definitely a shock,” Lakewood co-head coach Jon Murray said of South Whidbey. “It will definitely give them a confidence boost going into the (Cascade Conference) league meet. I think both teams learned a little bit about each other.”

Marysville-Pilchuck’s Haley Nemra placed sixth as the top local runner at the Invitational and led the Tomahawks to a fourth-place finish. Archbishop Murphy’s Lauren Moran was ninth with the Falcons runners coming in right behind. Shelby Lyman of Archbishop Murphy followed in 27th and Lakewood’s Sarah Dunn was 28th.

The Sehome Boys proved their No.1 rating legit, blowing out the field to capture the team title with 59 points. Bothell was second with 145 and Lakewood was third with 159 points. Marysville-Pilchuck was sixth and Everett finished in ninth in the boys competition.

Sehome placed three runners within the top five, including winner Mason McHenry, who covered the course in 16 minute, 17 seconds to take individual title. Sehome’s Clinton Overman finish second and Colin Flynn was fifth.

Lakewood’s Junior Nick Devier finish 10 seconds back of McHenry in fourth and Sophomore Taylor Guske was 10th for the Cougars.

“They did well overall for the conditions,” Murray said of the Cougars. “It is really nice to see in a big meet how your team stacks up against some of the top teams. It’s getting to championship time and this is were the kids get to pushing themselves.”
