RENTON — During a conference call with Seattle media, New York Jets quarterback Brett Favre said he is excited to be a part of Mike Holmgren’s final game at Qwest Field.
“I’m honored,” he said. “I’m honored to have played for him. I have no idea what he plans to do after this, but it doesn’t really matter. I’m honored to be there.”
Favre and the Jets will face Holmgren’s Seahawks on Sunday. It will mark the third time that the pair will be a part of a so-called goodbye game.
Two of the last three times that the Seahawks faced the Packers _ in 2005 and the 2007 postseason _ it was billed as possibly being the last game of Favre’s career.
Favre jumped on the Seahawks’ team bus after the 2005 regular-season finale and told Holmgren that he planned on retiring from the NFL. Of course, he came back the next year, and the year after that.
Last January, when the Seahawks played the Packers at Qwest Field, it marked another possible sendoff for the NFL’s all-time passing leader. But Favre and the Packers won that game, went on to lose in the NFC Championship game and … well, we all know the rest.
What matters is that Favre is back, now playing for the Jets, and he’ll have another chance to say goodbye on Sunday.
“I would not be here today — I truly believe that I would not be sitting here talking to you guys today, still playing professional football — had it not been for that guy,” the 39-year-old Favre said during his Wednesday conference call.
When asked whether he would be open to the idea of playing for Holmgren again, should the 60-year-old coach decide to come out of retirement, Favre chuckled.
“That would be awesome,” he said. “But he’d better hurry up.”
