Federal Way advances to 4A title game

TACOMA – Greg Washington’s two-run single in the fifth inning lifted defending champion Federal Way to a 3-1 semifinal victory over Richland in a semifinal game at the Class 4A tournament Friday night at Cheney Stadium.

Eagles starter Shea McFeely won a pitchers’ duel with Jayson Miller, allowing six hits and no earned runs while striking out six. Miller gave up five hits and all three runs in defeat.

Washington was 2-for-3 for Federal Way (21-2). His fifth-inning hit to left field scored Andre Piper-Jordan and Donny Farris to break a 1-1 tie.

Jake Muyco and Tyson Roberts were both 2-for-3 for the Bombers (22-3).

Federal Way advanced to Saturday night’s championship game against Woodinville, a 5-3 winner over South Kitsap in the other semifinal.

4A semifinal, Woodinville 5, South Kitsap 3: At Tacoma, senior Josh Monroe pitched a four-hitter for Woodinville.

Monroe gave up all three runs in the first two innings and settled down after that, striking out eight and walking just one.

Dan Knox took the loss, allowing 11 hits. He was hurt by four South Kitsap errors. He struck out seven and didn’t walk a batter.

Trailing 3-2, Woodinville got a two-run single from Andy Lentz in the fourth inning. Woodinville added an unearned insurance run in the sixth.

Mark Thompson had two hits and scored a run for the Falcons. Bobby Carlson and Casey Priseman each had two hits, an RBI and a run scored.

Josh Showers hit a two-run homer in the first inning to stake South Kitsap to a 2-0 lead.

3A semifinal, North Thurston 5, Skyline 3, (8 innings): At Tacoma, Jon McCaslin scattered nine hits in eight innings as unbeaten North Thurston advanced to the finals at Cheney Stadium.

The Rams scored three runs to break a 2-2 tie in the top of the eighth, with Brian Burmester and Shane Sullivan having RBI singles,

The Spartans collected four hits in the bottom half of the inning, but scored only once and stranded three baserunners.

McCaslin, a senior, struck out three and walked one in the complete-game victory for the Rams (20-0).

Zack Fluke and Sullivan both had three hits for North Thurston. Sullivan also scored two runs and had an RBI.

Dan Gronski led the Spartans (17-3) with three hits and two RBI.

3A semifinal, Eastmont 4, O’Dea 0: At Tacoma, Josh Bryant pitched a four-hitter for Eastmont.

Bryant, a senior, struck out four and walked one in the complete-game shutout.

The Wildcats (17-4) broke open a 1-0 game with a three-run sixth inning, keyed by shortstop Chris Eakle’s two-run single.

Ryan Tomchick was 2-for-4 for the Wildcats, who had only five hits off Irish starter Drew Brown and reliever Andrew Davenport. Brown threw five innings and took the loss despite giving up only two hits and two earned runs.

O’Dea’s record dropped to 14-6.

A semifinal, Colfax 4, Overlake 3: At Yakima, Greg Biagi’s sacrifice fly scored Jeff Pittman with the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Pittman had all three Colfax hits, all singles, and scored two of its runs.

B semifinal, DeSales 10, Wahkiakum 0: At Yakima, Brian Hall allowed two hits in six innings and hit a 385-foot home run for DeSales.

Hall, who is headed to Washington State on a football scholarship, struck out four and allowed a double by Randy Hoven in the secong inning and a single by Scott Hendrickson leading off the sixth.

Third baseman Nick Richard had three RBI for the Fighting Irish, who have won nine of the last 10 Class B state titles.

B semifinal, Cedar Park Christian 13, Northport 0: At Yakima, Adam Hoyle pitched a five-inning no-hitter for Cedar Park Christian.

Cedar Park combined five singles with two errors by Northport to score five runs in the first, with Hoyle helping his own cause with a one-out RBI single. He finished the day with three hits.
