On the hunt
San Francisco Chronicle columnist Scott Ostler wants you to know two things about Tiger Woods and the 2010 U.S. Open:
“Woods will win it. … When it comes to wrapping up the Open’s silver cup, the only question to ask Tiger is, “Paper or plastic?”
And Ostler also wants you to know that despite all the hullabaloo over Woods’ personal life, “this tournament isn’t going to be a Tiger tabloid extravaganza.”
Even so, the personal angle will pop up at the tournament from time to time, Ostler says: “Like during Tuesday’s practice rounds, when play backed up at the 10th tee and Woods’ group wound up cooling its heels not far from Tom Watson’s group.
“Watson has publicly scolded Woods for his on-course behavior, the F-bombs and club flips. Tiger hates it when golf legends do that. So as they milled about the tee area, neither of the former U.S. Open-at-Pebble-Beach champions and Stanford alumni acknowledged the presence of the other. Awkward!
“OK, now let’s talk golf.
“Woods will win this tournament because he is physically sound. He seems to have achieved some control over his private demons, and Pebble Beach suits Woods’ game like the vuvuzela suits a soccer fan’s musical taste.”
