Eat Canadiens first
How hated are the Montreal Canadiens in their home country, especially in Toronto, home to the Maple Leafs who are the Canadiens’ arch rivals?
According to a recent survey, more than a quarter of NHL fans in Canada are refusing to root for the Canadiens — even though Montreal is the only Canadian team left in this year’s Stanley Cup playoffs.
“If aliens show up wanting to enslave the entire human race, I will fight them,” Cathal Kelly wrote in the Toronto Star.
“But if the extraterrestrial invaders announce ahead of time that the Montreal Canadiens are the first to go, I’m willing to talk.”
Underdog Montreal beat Philadelphia 5-1 Thursday in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference Finals, but trail the Flyers two games to one in the best-of-seven series.
Rubbing it in: The No. 8 seed Canadiens stunned their detractors and the hockey world when they upset the No. 1 seed Penguins in Pittsburgh in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference semifinals last week.
“It was a true underdog story like those old ‘Road’ movies with Bing and Bob,” noted RJ Currie of SportsDeke.com, “only this time Crosby had no hope.”
PARTING SHOT
“I don’t want to think of myself as the amateur out here. I want to think of myself as a contender.”
