The goal was to raise $1 million for Haiti earthquake survivors, but there was a few purpose points sprinkled into Friday night’s charity exhibition event called “Hit for Haiti.”
In a match between Pete Sampras and Roger Federer against Andre Agassi and Rafael Nadal, some of the bad blood between the older rivals boiled to the top.
After Sampras crushed a forehand winner and shared a fist bump with his partner, Federer, Agassi shot him a quick barb. “You always have to get serious, huh Pete?” Agassi said.
Agassi then agreed to joke around and imitated Agassi’s pigeon-toed walk that made the bald-headed star famous on the tour for so many years.
Then Agassi hit below the belt — the pockets to be exact. Agassi pulled out his pockets and mimed not having any money, making a joke about Sampras’ supposed penchant for being a bad tipper.
“This rivalry’s intense, man,” Federer said, trying to lighten the mood.
Smiling and laughing a little bit but obviously preturbed, Sampras crushed a serve that just sailed over Agassi’s head.
“You know what, it’s better than being a valet when you pull up,” Agassi said to raucous laughter from the fan at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden.
