First-place Lakewood fends off Nooksack challenge

LAKEWOOD – The Lakewood Cougars couldn’t have picked a better time to have a breakout offensive performance.

Five Lakewood players had multiple hits Friday, led by Ronnie Morton and Jake Rife, who were both 3-for-4. The Cougars’ season-high 16-hit attack resulted in an 11-1 North Cascades victory against Nooksack Valley that was reduced to six innings by the 10-run rule.

With the victory, Lakewood (3-0 league, 5-1-1 overall) maintained possession of first place over Nooksack and Meridian.

“We hit the ball today,” Lakewood coach Larry Delaney said. “We’ve been waiting for our bats to come alive.”

Morton had two RBI and Rife drove in Lakewood’s first run with a first-inning double. Rife also scored the go-ahead and game-winning run later in the first.

Delaney said the Cougars are feeling more comfortable in the batter’s box with six games under their belts.

“The players are starting to see the ball better. Some guys broke out today.”

Winning pitcher Ryan Martin, a freshman, struck out seven batters, allowed one walk and surrendered just three hits in five innings. Nooksack scored its only run during a double play.

“We’ll take that every time,” Delaney said.
