The popular Edmonds Coho Derby runs Saturday, sponsored by the Sno-King Chapter, Puget Sound Anglers, featuring a top prize of $5,000. Tickets are $30, limited in number, and available at All Season Charters in Edmonds; Bayside Marine and John’s Sporting Goods in Everett; Ed’s Surplus and Ted’s Sport Center in Lynnwood; Greg’s Custom Rods in Lake Stevens; Outdoor Emporium in Seattle, and Sportco in Fife. This is a Northwest Salmon Derby Series event, so participants are automatically entered in the end of season drawing for the Series’ boat/motor/trailer package.
Should be an excellent derby. There are lots of nice coho in the area, according to All Star Charters owner/skipper Gary Krein, with rumors of an 18-pounder taken early this week off Edmonds. Krein says the winner will probably come from the shoreline between Shilshole and the shipwreck, with emphasis on the stretch from Brown’s Bay to the Edmonds oil docks. Try a flasher/squid combo, light green, glow white, or purple haze, fished shallow at daybreak and deeper through the day.
