If you’re looking to buy a gift for a fly fishing friend or relative, here are five suggestions:
1) Glacier gloves. The manufacturer has a lot of gloves, from some with the tips cut out to a nice pair that includes windproof fleece, a polyurethane palm and a flip mitten to put over the exposed fingertips when you’re not using them. A must for a steelhead angler to fight the cold. They start at around $20 and go up.
2) DryFly wheat whiskey, vodka, or gin. This Washington state product has a great looking logo of a dry fly. I like the fact that it’s a local product. At our fly club Christmas party last weekend, a lot of members stuffed tickets in the can for Dry Fly Vodka, so I know it’s popular. It starts at around $30 and goes up.
3) The Measure Net. These $35 nets have a ruler designed into the mesh bag. They’ve been around for a number of years, but remain popular because you can measure your fish and release it quickly without having to touch it.
4) Skagit Master or Skagit Master 2. These DVDs, by Ed Ward and Scott Howell, respectively, have a lot of good information for catching steelhead. Ward, who helped design the popular Skagit head lines for spey rods, has forgetten more about steelheading than I will ever know. I don’t know guide Scott Howell, but the video clearly has a lot of good advice. 5) FishPond thermos. FishPond makes a lot of cool equipment for fly fishers. I especially like their fly vests and tech packs. But most people want to select their own packs, so you can’t go wrong with a thermos this time of year. They also have a nice flask if you picked up something from Dry Fly distillers.
