Five local coaches and athletic directors were among those selected to the inaugural seeding committees for this season’s high school football state playoffs.
The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association announced Wednesday the members who will serve on the three 12-person committees, each of which will be tasked with seeding the state-playoff brackets for two classifications. An application process was used to select the committee members.
Among those selected to the Class 4A/3A seeding committee were 11th-year Oak Harbor head coach Jay Turner and Snohomish athletic director Mark Perry, who was the Panthers’ head coach for 18 seasons before stepping down in 2012.
The 2A/1A committee will include 13th-year Lakewood head coach Dan Teeter and second-year Sultan head coach Jim Wright, who held previous head-coaching positions at Evergreen (Seattle), Seattle Lutheran and Franklin.
Third-year Darrington head coach Buck Marsh, who also serves as the school district’s superintendent and athletic director, was selected to the 2B/1B committee.
The WIAA announced in June that it will use committees to determine seeding for the this year’s state football playoffs. It replaces the traditional draw format of previous years, which matched teams based on district seeds.
Teams will still qualify for the state playoffs through their respective districts. After the field of state-playoff teams is set, the committees will determine the brackets by seeding the teams based on their performance throughout the season.
The committees are scheduled to meet prior to the season on Aug. 12, and then again after the Week 10 playoff games to determine state playoff seeding.
