Alana Pazevic
Jackson Timberwolves
Pazevic had a standout sophomore season bouncing back from a third-place finish at state as a freshman to winning a title in the 100-yard freestyle, posting an automatic all-American time of 51.75 seconds and beating the second-place finisher by a full body length, this after she set the 4A District 1 meet record in the 100. Pazevic also picked up a fourth-place finish at state in the 100 backstroke and swam on Jackson’s 400 freestyle relay team, which placed third at state. “Alana has always exceeded expectations. To help her achieve her goals we have to set things slightly out of reach. There is so much raw talent there. Her enthusiasm and spirit is difficult to match. She loves to compete and is the pulse of our swim team,” Jackson head coach Drew Whorley said.
Melissa Randolf
Glacier Peak Grizzlies
Part of the Snohomish/Glacier Peak switch, Randolf will make the move from the mighty Panthers to the undetermined Grizzlies. Last year Randolf placed fifth at the 4A state tournament in the 50-yard freestyle and eighth in the 100 butterfly — as a freshman. Randolf also swam on Snohomish’s second—place 200 medley relay squad and fourth-place 400 freestyle relay team. Randolf cemented herself in 4A District 1 history when she set a meet record in the 100 butterfly. “Melissa looks great. She swam a lot over the summer and should be a force to be reckon with,” her former-Snohomish Panthers and current Grizzlies coach Rob Serviss said.
Nathalie Klein
Kamiak Knights
The senior is determined to go out in style and Kamiak head coach Chris Erickson hopes that dedication will get her closer to a top-eight finish at state and a shot at the school record in the 100-yard breaststroke, where she placed 13th in Class 4A last season. At district the versatile swimmer placed second in the breaststroke, her signature race, and third in the 200 individual medley. She also anchored the Knights’ 200 freestyle relay team to a second-place finish at district.
Emily Ferreira
Snohomish Panthers
Though her last name may look like the popular Italian car, the only comparison between Ferreira and Ferrari is speed. As a sophomore last year, Ferreira won a state title in the 100-yard breaststroke with an automatic all-American time of 1 minute, 4.84 seconds, placed fifth in the 200 individual medley and helped aid Snohomish to a second-place finish in the 200 medley relay and a fourth-place finish in the 400 freestyle relay. “Last year was fantastic. It’s always fun when you have an individual win a state title. She’s a competitor and very much a big-meet swimmer. She swam over the summer and right now looks like she’s in pretty good shape,” Snohomish head coach Rob Serviss said.
Laurin Williams
Shorewood Thunderbirds
There was no sophomore slump for Laurin Williams. Williams, now a junior for Shorewood, finished fifth at state in the 500-yard freestyle, setting a school record with a time of 5 minutes, 4.70 seconds and finished 10th at state in the 200 freestyle. “The 200 and 500 are her strengths,” Shorewood head coach Susie McDowell said. McDowell believes that year-round swimming will help Williams swim even faster this year and gives her shot at breaking 5 minutes in the 500. “She had a very good season … since then she is faster than (last year),” McDowell said.
