KIRKLAND – The anticipated rematch between Seattle’s Ken Hamlin and New Orleans Saints receiver Dante’ Stallworth might be on hold.
Hamlin, a starting free safety for the Seahawks, was held out of Thursday’s practice because of a left foot injury he suffered the previous day. He is listed as questionable for the opener against New Orleans on Sunday.
The injury did not appear to be serious, as Hamlin watched practice from the sideline and walked without a limp.
If Hamlin can’t play Sunday, strong safety Terreal Bierria probably would switch positions, with rookie Michael Boulware stepping into the starting lineup. Or the Seahawks could go with Bierria and Marquand Manuel, who was claimed off waivers from the Cincinnati Bengals on Monday.
Hamlin started 14 games as a rookie last season, making an early impression because of his ability to deliver bone-jarring hits. He made all the highlight reels with a hit on Stallworth last year that caused the Saints receiver to lose his helmet.
Hungry for turnovers: Like the other 31 NFL teams, the Seahawks are looking to get off to a fast start this weekend.
They proved in 2003 that the best way to break off a few quick wins is with a ball-hawking defense that creates fumbles and interceptions.
“Defensively, we need to create turnovers,” coach Mike Holmgren said. “It will help the offense, and it will help the team. As young as we are at some positions on defense, it gives them the confidence we need.”
The Seahawks had a plus-12 turnover ratio through the first three games of 2003, allowing them to get off to a 3-0 start.
Quick slants: Tackle Walter Jones was officially added to the 53-man roster Thursday. To make room for Jones, the Seahawks released receiver Jerheme Urban. The 23-year-old receiver is eligible for the practice squad, but must clear waivers first. … Defensive tackle Marcus Tubbs (hamstring) and wide receiver Alex Bannister (shoulder) all practiced Thursday but are still listed as questionable on the injury list. Offensive lineman Jerry Wunsch (ankle) is also listed as questionable but did not practice. … Wide receiver Koren Robinson took the day off because of a headache but is expected to be available for Sunday’s game.
