Numerous mistakes in pass coverage, pivotal penalties and a botched punt return have really hurt Archbishop Murphy, which is actually fortunate to be behind by just 14 points by halftime.
Besides giving up an 80-yard TD pass on Lynden’s first play from scrimmage, Murphy committed six penalties for 45 yards in the first two quarters. The Wildcats got within 14-7 late in the first quarter.
But midway through the second quarter Lynden recovered a fumbled punt return at the Murphy 17-yard line. Five plays later Lynden QB Jordan Hastings completed his second scoring pass of the day, this one a 2-yarder to Blair Bomber.
In the first half Bomber had three receptions for 92 yards and two TDs. Hastings has 110 passing yards.
Murphy’s leading rusher is C.J. Milburn (six carries, 70 yards, one TD). Milburn has also played extremely well on defense, helping his team stay within striking distance.
Murphy must figure out how to defend Lynden’s passing attack and quit making so many miscues. Or else the Wildcats’ season will be over in a little more than an hour.
