EDMONDS – Behind by a goal with four minutes remaining in its first-round Class 2A girls soccer state playoff game, it looked as though Sultan would be making other plans for Saturday.
“I was thinking golf on Saturday,” Sultan assistant coach Cindy Goodwin said.
But the Turks will be cancelling all tee times after late goals first tied the score and then put Sultan ahead for good in a 3-2 victory over Klahowya at Edmonds Stadium Tuesday night.
The victory advanced the Turks advanced to the state quarterfinals. Sultan will play Ridgefield at a site and time to be announced today.
After a night full shots that were either saved or near misses and trailing 2-1, Sultan needed a shot that ended in the goal.
Katie Brown stepped up and answered the call. With time wasting away, Brown took a cross from Heather Howard and buried the ball in the far right corner of the goal. Tying the score at 2-2, Brown gave the Turks at least a tangible hope for overtime.
But freshman Mindy Cramer wanted nothing to do with overtime. With less than a minute remaining, she took a looping pass from Howard and stuck it in the back of the goal for the game-winner.
After her team played hard the entire game, Sultan’s coach Andrea Fuller felt vindicated with the final results.
“We played well offensively the entire game,” Fuller said. “It was just nice to dominate a game and come out on top.”
Sultan was forced into its late-game heroics by two second-half goals by Klahowya. After a scoreless first half and then a quick goal by Sultan to open the second, Klahowya found itself in need of some offense that had been missing.
They got it from Hilary Crisman, who crossed a ball to Britini Hintz for Klahowya’s first goal at the 20 minute mark. Crisman then took a direct free kick and chipped it past the Sultan goalkeeper for Klahowya’s second goal.
