Former Mariner Valle named AquaSox manager

The Everett AquaSox will have a memorable name from the Seattle Mariners’ past in their dugout this season.

The Mariners announced Wednesday that former Mariners catcher Dave Valle will manage the AquaSox for the 2014 Northwest League season.

The 53-year-old Valle spent 10 seasons with the Mariners as a player from 1984-1993. More recently he spent the past 16 seasons as part of Seattle’s broadcast team. This is his first managing position.

Valle replaces Rob Mummau, who spent the previous two seasons as Everett’s manager, guiding the Sox to a 90-62 record and two playoff appearances. This season Mummau will manage the Pulaski Mariners, Seattle’s affiliate in the rookie Appalachian League, where he managed in 2008 and 2011.

The Mariners also announced the rest of Everett’s on-field staff for the 2014 season. Scott Steinmann returns for another stint with the Sox to serve as the team’s hitting coach. Steinmann managed Everett in 2011, served as a coach in 1999, 2010 and 2012, and played for the Sox in 1996. Nasusel Cabrera will serve as Everett’s pitching coach in his first stint with the team. Shane Zdebiak takes over as the team’s athletic trainer following the retirement of Spyder Webb after 35 years with Seattle’s Northwest League affiliate.

Everett’s season begins June 13 at home against the Hillsboro Hops.
