PULLMAN — Former Washington State University football coach Mike Price has taken himself out of consideration to return to Pullman.
Price, a native of Everett, told the El Paso Times newspaper that he plans to stay at Texas-El Paso, where he is 25-23 in four seasons as the head football coach. He said he was flattered that some Cougars fans and former players wanted him to return to WSU, where he coached teams to five bowls, including two Rose Bowls.
The Cougars are looking for a replacement for Bill Doba, who stepped down last month.
The Spokane Spokesman-Review reported that WSU officials have interviewed at least three candidates: Eastern Washington head coach Paul Wulff, Oklahoma co-offensive coordinator Kevin Sumlin and former Idaho coach and WSU assistant John L. Smith.
WSU athletic director Jim Sterk said he hopes to hire a new coach by Christmas.
