Fortunate Falcons make playoffs

Herald staff

LANGLEY – It’s been awhile, but the South Whidbey boy’s basketball team is just glad to be back in the playoffs.

The Falcon’s 65-49 victory over Granite Falls Thursday night coupled with Meridian’s loss to Blaine clinched the last remaining playoff spot in the 2A district tournament for South Whidbey. Its there first playoff appearance since 1994.

“It was Senior Night tonight and it was a great atmosphere,” said South Whidbey coach Andy Davis. “And to have the game mean something was great.”

Ahead by only a basket coming out of halftime, South Whidbey outscored Granite Falls 35-21 in the second half behind two great performances by Josh Coleman and Brandon Turner.

Coleman and Turner both scored nine points in the second half to lead the Falcons.

But, fittingly on Senior Night it was a Senior who made the difference for South Whidbey. Tim Gabelein created a constant offensive threat en route to scoring a game-high 29 points and collecting 11 rebounds.

“Tim was consistent all night,” Davis said. “But, really it was an all-around team effort that got us the win.”
