Four starters lead Monroe to district playoff berth

MONROE – The Monroe girls basketball team had four starters and a reserve in double figures scoring to clinch a District 1 playoff berth Friday night.

Monroe cruised to an 82-71 Wesco North victory over Marysville-Pilchuck at the Monroe gym.

Monroe’s starters built an 18- point lead midway through the third quarter before being subbed out.

Sarah Morton, a University of Washington recruit, scored 14 points and dished out seven assists in 16 minutes of play. Keena Hopkins added 14 points, nine assists and seven rebounds. Chelsea Drivstuen had a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Emily Drivstuen also scored 11 points.

“We slowed them down with a zone defense,” Monroe assistant coach Mark Dickson said. “I don’t think they were ready for it and we took advantage of it.”

Reserve Morgan Thomas scored a Bearcats team-high 19 points. Thomas was 14 of 21 from the foul line in the fourth quarter.

The Tomahawks were led by Nicole Peterson’s 19 points. Peterson hit five 3-pointers in the game and Nancy Couls added 18 points.

Stanwood 51, Arlington 31: At Stanwood, senior Rachele Kloke had a game-high 19 points and Kayla Shaughnessy added 10 points to propel Stanwood to the Wesco North win. The Spartans didn’t allow Arlington to score in double digits after the first quarter.

South Whidbey 57, Coupeville 36: At Coupeville, playing their first significant minutes of the season, the freshman tandem of Chantal LaChaussee (10 points) and Cayla Calderwood (10 rebounds) led the Falcons to a Cascade Conference victory over Coupeville. Despite missing almost the entire fourth quarter, Lindsey Newman still managed to score 14 points and haul down 14 rebounds for South Whidbey. Kayla Lawson and Megan led the Wolves with eight points apiece.
