Fourth seed stages upset in North singles

STANWOOD – Cascade’s Madison Everett didn’t get the benefit of a first-round bye in the Wesco North girls tennis tournament.

When it came time to face the girl that did, Everett did not back down.

Facing No. 1 seed Emily Starr of Snohomish, Everett staged a 6-4, 7-4 upset Thursday at Stanwood H.S.

Everett came in as the fourth seed.

In the other singles semifinal, it was Stanwood’s Kelsey Mickels knocking off No. 2 seeded Ashley Ross of Lake Stevens, 6-2, 6-3.

Matches continue at 3 p.m. today at Stanwood H.S.

Wesco 3A meet: At Mill Creek, Everett’s Julie Mills plays Stephanie Eli of Meadowdale in today’s singles championship. Mills battled through three sets, including a first-set tiebreaker, to get by Shorecrest’s Alena Owen. Eli defeated Shorecrest’s Theresa Leigh in straight sets.
