Freshman leads Snohomish

MERCER ISLAND – Sarah Shawback not only took first place in two events (200-yard individual medley and 100 backstroke) to help Snohomish win a non-conference meet 94-91 over Mercer Island. But she posted 4A state meet qualifying times in both races.

And she’s just a freshman.

“Sarah had an outstanding meet,” said Snohomish coach John Pringle. “We’ve never beaten (Mercer Island) before and we’re a pretty young team.”

Shawback wasn’t the only swimmer racking up state qualifying times. The Panthers’ second-place 200 medley relay team (Deborah Shawback, Megan Blue, Kelsey Randolf and Anne Bilbro) also swam one and Randolf earned another with her second-place finish in the 100 butterfly.

“The 200 medley relay set the tone for the meet,” Pringle said. “We were less than three-tenths of a second behind them. We were right on their heels.”

Snohomish relied on its depth to close the scoring gap, earning a lot of second, third and fourth places throughout the middle of the meet.

By the 400 freestyle relay, the Panthers’ needed only to place second and third to win the meet.

“It came down to the last event,” Pringle said. “We needed second and third, and that’s what we got.”

Mercer Island earned its own share of state qualifying times. Rachel Godfred won two events and earned 3A state qualifying times in the 50 freestyle, 100 freestyle and as a member of the 200 medley relay and 400 freestyle relay teams.

“(Mercer Island) hasn’t lost a dual meet since 2000. They are a great team and really well-coached,” Pringle beamed. “It was a great way to start the year.”

Girls soccer

Archbishop Murphy 2, Seattle Christian 1: At Sea-Tac, Melissa Von Der Hofen scored the game-winning goal with an assist from Andrea Gaitan to help the Wildcats win the non-conference game.

Shoreline Christian 4, North Sound Christian 3: At Mountlake Terrace, Grant Brandal scored all four goals for the Crusaders. Blake Mallory scored two and Keith Kochendorfer one for North Sound Christian.

Volleyball

Shoreline Christian 3, Summit 0: At Shoreline, Shoreline Christian defeated Summit 26-24, 25-15, 25-13 in the non-conference match. Julia DeKoekkoek had nine kills for the Crusaders, while Jennette DeKoekkoek earned 17 assists and three service aces. This was the first game of the season for both teams.
