Friday night in the WNBA

Don’t look now, but the San Antonio Silver Stars are undefeated — still.

To be fair, they probably shouldn’t be after Friday night, but part of the mark of being a good team is finding ways to win. So, it’s possible that the Silver Stars are just a good team after they finished off a 101-99

comeback victory over the Phoenix Mercury.

The Silver Stars outscored the Mercury by 16 points in the second half to steal the game in Phoenix, and keep the Mercury winless at 0-3.

Sophia Young scored 20 of her 26 points in the second half to help the Silver Stars improve to 4-0 for the first time in franchise history. Becky Hammon added 22 points and nine assists for San Antonio.

Diana Taurasi scored 20, Candice Dupree and Penny Taylor each added 18 and Dewanna Bonner scored 15 points, but it wasn’t enough to get struggling Phoenix its first victory.

Moving from one early season impressive team to another, the Minnesota Lynx proved once again that they are one of the top teams in the WNBA with a convincing 96-85 victory over the Atlanta Dream.

It was the fourth straight win for the Lynx, who improved to 4-1, while the Dream dropped to 1-4.

Seimone Augustus made nine of her 14 shots and scored 26 points to lead the way for Minnesota. Rebekkah Brunson chipped in 18 and rookie Maya Moore added 13.

Angel McCoughtry led the Dream in scoring with 27 points.

The Lynx and Silver Stars are two of the early season storylines of the WNBA because of how well they have played. The Mercury and Dream are big stories as well, but for how bad they have played. Many WNBA experts had Phoenix and Atlanta making deep playoff runs, but right now there is just one win between the two teams.

Also in action on Friday night, was the Chicago Sky and the New York Liberty. Chicago is proving, like San Antonio in the West, to be a team some may have underestimated. The Sky defeated the Liberty 85-73, to improve their record to 3-1, matching Connecticut for the best record in the Eastern Conference.

Sylvia Fowles scored a season-high 27 points and grabbed 11 rebounds as the Sky won their third in a row. Epiphanny Prince added 17 for the Chicago. Gonzaga alum Courtney Vandersloot scored just six points, but dished out five assists and her team had a +19 scoring advantage over the Liberty when she was on the floor.

Cappie Pondexter led New York (2-3) with 20 points.

In the only other game on Friday, the Storm (2-1) defeated the Indiana Fever (3-2) 68-54.
