Frog comback falls 1 run short

SPOKANE – The Everett AquaSox kept chipping away, but in the end they came up one run short.

Playing from behind throughout, Everett repeatedly challenged the Spokane Indians’ lead. However, the Sox were never able to catch up, falling 6-5 Saturday night in Northwest League play.

The loss was Everett’s fourth straight against Spokane and the Sox are in danger of being swept in the five-game series, which concludes tonight.

Billy Killian went 2-for-4 with two runs and Jon Greene had three RBI for Spokane (18-20).

Kalian Sams scored a pair of runs to lead Everett (14-25).

Spokane grabbed a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning, then battled off several Everett comeback attempts. The Sox scored in both the fourth and the fifth, only to be matched by the Indians. Everett got single runs in the sixth and ninth to make it close, but left the tying run stranded at first at the game’s end.

Ryan Tatsuko earned the win for Spokane, improving to 2-3. In 51/3 innings he surrendered four runs on four hits and a walk, striking out four. Andrew Laughter earned the save, his third.

Doug Salinas, who started well but ended poorly, took the loss for Everett, dropping to 1-6. After retiring the first seven batters of the game he ended up giving up six runs on nine hits in 41/3 innings, walking one and striking out four.

Spokane opened the scoring in the bottom of the third. After retiring the first seven batters Salinas allowed the next four to reach, Andres James’ single bringing in the game’s first run. Then with the bases loaded and two out, Jon Greene lined a two-run single to center, staking Spokane to a 3-0 lead.

Everett responded quickly in the top of the fourth. Joe Dunigan’s single to center scored Welington Dotel. Dunigan later scored on a wild pitch, cutting the deficit to 3-2.

Spokane made it 4-2 in the bottom of the fourth, Johan Yan’s double down the left-field line driving home Killian.

Everett pulled within one again in the fifth on Ogui Diaz’s two-out RBI double to left.

But once again Spokane immediately re-extended its lead, Renny Osuna smacking an RBI triple and scoring on Greene’s sacrifice fly, making it 6-3.

Everett made it 6-4 in the sixth, Gregory Halman scoring on Craig Hurba’s sacrifice fly to center. The Sox then pulled within one in the ninth when Sams led off with a double and scored on pinch hitter Manelik Pimentel’s pinch-hit bloop single. But Laughter struck out Dotel to end the game.
