EVERETT — Fans of the Everett AquaSox had to wait nearly a week to see their team’s first home game of the 2016 Northwest League season, but the Frogs made the wait worthwhile as they defeated the visiting Boise Hawks 9-2 Thursday night before 3,259 fans in the first game of a five-game series.
The two teams resume their series at 7:05 p.m. today. Seattle Mariners left-hander Wade Miley is scheduled to make a rehab start for the AquaSox.
Everett (4-3) got six shutout innings from starter Luiz Gohara, who struck out five in earning his first victory of the season. Considered one of the Seattle Mariners’ top pitching prospects, Gohara has not allowed a run and has fanned 12 batters in 10? innings so far this season.
Everett first baseman Kristian Brito finished 4-for-5 with a solo home run and three RBI to up his hitting streak to six games. Bryson Brigman had three hits and scored a run, and Jordan Cowan had two hits and scored twice for the AquaSox.
Erick Julio (0-1) allowed four runs on six hits to take the loss for Boise (2-5).
The AquaSox took the lead in the top of the second when Brito homered to left-center and Nick Zammarelli doubled and scored on a Boise error. Austin Greer then came home on a wild pitch for a 3-0 Everett advantage.
Cowan singled with one out in the fourth and came home on another error to push Everett’s lead to 4-0.
The Hawks got one back against Everett reliever Paul Covelle when Jacob Bosiokovic led off the seventh with a double and came home on an RBI groundout by Wes Jones to cut the deficit to 4-1.
Brito drove in his second run of the game with a bases-loaded infield single in the bottom of the seventh, Zammarelli drove in another with a fielder’s choice and Kyle Lewis came home on a wild pitch for a 7-1 lead.
Lewis, the Seattle Mariners’ first-round pick in this year’s Major League Baseball draft, finished 2-for-4 with a double and a walk in his home debut.
Brito and Cowan added RBI singles in the bottom of the eighth.
Luis Castro hit a solo home run that bounced off the top of the right-center field fence and over to make it 9-2 in the top of the ninth off Everett reliever Joselito Cano. That proved to be the game’s final run.
Everett pounded out 14 hits on the night. AquaSox pitchers limited the Hawks to six hits.
