G. Falls survives with 4-3 victory over Lakewood

ANACORTES – Granite Falls survived.

After losing their first-round game Saturday and falling into loser-out consolation play, the defending state champion Tigers defeated Lakewood 4-3 on Tuesday in a 2A District 1 playoff game to advance to a winner-to-state game at 11 a.m. Saturday at Daniels Field in Anacortes.

Jon Pennington had a key one-out double in the bottom of the fifth inning and Scott Kalma singled him home to give Granite Falls the winning run.

Kalma was 3-for-3 with an RBI and Pennington was 2-for-3 with an RBI.

“A very good team effort all the way through,” Tigers coach Doug Engstrom said.

Josh Knudson threw a complete game with seven strikeouts and one walk.

“Knudson threw a very good game,” Engstrom said.

Jordan Stauffer was 2-for-4 with two RBI and Josh Spears was 2-for-4 for the Cougars.

Ryan Martin pitched a complete game with three strikeouts for Lakewood.

Cedarcrest 4, South Whidbey 3: At Anacortes, Travis Cook pitched a five hitter with 13 strikeouts to lead Cedarcrest to a 2A District 1 playoff win. Teammate Jansen Woelz was 2-for-3. Cedarcrest plays Archbishop Murphy at 11 am Saturday at Volunteer Field in a winner-to-state, loser-out game.

Meadowdale 7, Sedro-Woolley 2: At Mount Vernon, Meadowdale advanced to the winner-to-state 3A District 1 championship game at 2 p.m. Saturday at Sherman Anderson Field in Mt. Vernon. Chase Anselment got the Mavericks on the scoreboard early with an RBI single in the first inning. Bryan Hogue doubled in a run in the second and scored on a Matt Gorman single. In the fourth, Hogue had a two-run, bases-loaded single and a third run scored while Hogue was caught in rundown between first and second bases. In the fifth, Sedro-Woolley had the bases loaded with no outs and a run in, but Meadowdale pitcher Jake Haight got out of the jam with a double play grounder and a strikeout.

Shorecrest 6, Ferndale 3: At Mount Vernon, Shorecrest’s Anthony Jochim hit a two-run home run, his third of the season, in the third inning to break open the 3A District 1 playoff game. The Scots advance to meet Meadowdale at 2 p.m. Saturday at Sherman Anderson Field in the winner-to-state championship game. Shorecrest pitcher Riley Reynolds struck out seven batters in six innings.
