G. Falls wins shootout to advance to district

GRANITE FALLS — Kelsey Carlson used her hands and her foot to lift the Granite Falls girls soccer team into the Class 2A District 1 tournament.

After 80 minutes of regulation and two five-minute overtimes, the Tigers defeated Blaine 2-1 in a shootout in a district play-in game on Thursday at Granite Falls High School, with Carlson sinking the winning goal after making a critical save in goal.

“It was really nice for (Kelsey) to make the save, then turn around and nail the game winner,” Granite Falls head coach Pat Pawlak said.

Carlson made three stops against the first seven Blaine shooters she faced. With the shootout tied 4-4, Carlson made her fourth stop, then she stepped to the line to take the Tigers’ eighth shot — a goal that sent the team on to the district tournament.

Granite Falls plays Burlington-Edison, the North No. 1 seed, in the first round at 1 p.m. Saturday at Burlington-Edison High School.

The biggest challenge the Tigers’ Carlson and Blaine keeper Janelle Gobbato faced through the first 58 minutes of regulation was keeping warm.

“It was a midfield battle, the midfielders were battling back and forth,” Pawlak said. “The game was evenly match the way it was played.”

The scoreless deadlock was broken in the 58th minute when the Tigers’ Katie Cashman found the net with an assist from Kassi Hoerner.

“Kassi touched a pass behind (Blaine’s) back line — too far out for their keeper, too far back for the defenders — and Katie was there,” Pawlak said. “It was a highlight of the game, real pretty.”

About 10 minutes later the score was once again tied when Wren Baldwin scored for Blaine.
