G. Falls wins shootout to advance to district

GRANITE FALLS — Kelsey Carlson used her hands and her foot to lift the Granite Falls girls soccer team into the Class 2A District 1 tournament.

After 80 minutes of regulation and two five-minute overtimes, the Tigers defeated Blaine 2-1 in a shootout in a district play-in game on Thursday at Granite Falls High School, with Carlson sinking the winning goal after making a critical save in goal.

“It was really nice for (Kelsey) to make the save, then turn around and nail the game winner,” Granite Falls head coach Pat Pawlak said.

Carlson made three stops against the first seven Blaine shooters she faced. With the shootout tied 4-4, Carlson made her fourth stop, then she stepped to the line to take the Tigers’ eighth shot — a goal that sent the team on to the district tournament.

Granite Falls plays Burlington-Edison, the North No. 1 seed, in the first round at 1 p.m. Saturday at Burlington-Edison High School.

The biggest challenge the Tigers’ Carlson and Blaine keeper Janelle Gobbato faced through the first 58 minutes of regulation was keeping warm.

“It was a midfield battle, the midfielders were battling back and forth,” Pawlak said. “The game was evenly match the way it was played.”

The scoreless deadlock was broken in the 58th minute when the Tigers’ Katie Cashman found the net with an assist from Kassi Hoerner.

“Kassi touched a pass behind (Blaine’s) back line — too far out for their keeper, too far back for the defenders — and Katie was there,” Pawlak said. “It was a highlight of the game, real pretty.”

About 10 minutes later the score was once again tied when Wren Baldwin scored for Blaine.

Lakewood 4, Lynden 1: At Marysville, Anna Work had two assists and scored in the 19th minute to help Lakewood beat Lynden in a 2A District 1 play-in game. The Cougars face Bellingham at 5:30 p.m., Saturday at Bellingham Civic Stadium.

At Lakewood H.S.

Goals—Lakewood: Osburn, Work, Nunley, Bustad. Lynden: Watt. Assists—Lakewood: Work 2, Bustad, Silva. Lynden: none. Goalkeepers—Lakewood: Steinborn. Lynden: Salminen. Records—Lakewood 10-7 overall. Lynden 5-12.

Sehome 4, Sultan 0: At Bellingham, Sierra Loveland-Pope scored two first-half goals to lift Sehome past Sultan in a loser-out Class 2A District 1 play-in game.

At Civic Stadium

Goals—Sehome: Loveland-Pope 2, Tarleton, Hunt. Goalkeepers—Sultan: Novak. Sehome: Olsen. Records—Sultan 1-15-0 overall. Sehome 14-3.

South Whidbey 3, Mount Baker 2 (shootout): Karissa Thomas, assisted by Rachel Harris, scored two goals in South Whidbey’s narrow victory over Mount Baker. The Falcons won the shootout to earn a spot in the 2A District 1 tournament. South Whidbey plays Archbishop Murphy on Saturday.

At Mount Baker H.S.

King’s 5, Nooksack 0: At Duvall, King’s moved on in the 1A District 1 girls soccer playoffs with a shutout of Nooksack. Hillary Zevenbergen had a hand in each of the first three goals for the Knights, who move onto the next round Saturday at Mount Vernon.

At Cedarcrest H.S.

Goals—King’s: Zevenbergen 2, Crosby, Young, Lampe. Assists—King’s: Fretland, Zevenbergen, Lampe, Thoresen, Crosby. Goalkeepers—King’s: Maddy McDevitt. Nooksack: Kristine Sorenson. Records—King’s 10-5-1 overall. Nooksack 1-16.

Marysville-Pilchuck 6, Oak Harbor 1: At Marysville, Kassandra Riozzi assisted on all three of Melissa Lauer’s goals and scored twice to help lead Marysville-Pilchuck to the Wesco North victory.

Cascade 1, Arlington 0: Cascade’s Sam Munger, assisted by Katy Gross, scored the only goal of the game en route to the Bruins Wesco North win. Goalkeeper Brittany Greene shut out the Eagles.

At Everett Memorial Stadium

Goals—Cascade: Munger. Assists—Cascade: Gross. Goalkeepers—Cascade: Greene. Arlington: Boulton, Wilson. Records—Cascade: 4-12-0 league and overall. Arlington: 2-12-2, 2-12-2.

Everett 2, Lake Stevens 0: Annie Sittauer scored a goal in the 10th minute and assisted Sele Vance in the second half to lead Everett to the Wesco North victory.

At Lake Stevens H.S.

Shorecrest 1, Mountlake Terrace 0 (OT): At Lynnwood, Jessica Rankin kicked in a loose ball two minutes into overtime to allow Shorecrest to grab the Wesco South victory.

Kamiak 7, Mariner 0: At Mukilteo, on a night when the seniors were honored, Kamiak senior Kelli Stewart scored three goals and dished out four assists to help her team to a Wesco South victory. Stewart either scored or assisted on every goal and now has 27 goals on the season.

At Kamiak H.S.

Jackson 3, Edmonds-Woodway 1: At Edmonds, Jackson continued to roll, getting two goals and an assist from Laura Hernandez and a goal and an assist from Kristi Kingma. Edmonds-Woodway’s Cheyenne Smith scored in the 15th minute to take an early lead, but Jackson scored the next three to pick up the Wesco South win.

Shorewood 1, Meadowdale 0: At Shoreline, Jackie Lykstad scored in the 46th minute with an assist from Alexandra Bartlett to lift Shorewood to the Wesco South victory. Leah Butterfield recorded the shutout in goal for the Thunderbirds.

At Shoreline Stadium

Boys soccer

North Sound Christian 4, Seattle Academy 0: At Seattle, Tanner Mahler scored North Sound Christian’s last two goals, and Daron Otis chipped in a goal and an assist to hand the Lions the non-conference victory. Northwest 1B winner North Sound (6-0 league, 13-2 overall) is set to play Northwest 2B winner La Conner in the playoffs next Thursday.

At Seattle Academy H.S.
