In other baseball news, Gatorade recently announced its 2007-08 Gatorade Washington Baseball Player of the Year. The winner is left-handed pitcher/outfielder Rusty Shellhorn of Central Valley.
The 5-foot-10 senior was 7-3 with a 0.78 earned-run average on the mound. He tallied 125 strikeouts in 59 innings and helped Central Valley advance to the 4A state tourney.
Shellhorn provided one of the most incredible performances of the season: On May 9 he struck out 21 batters in a win versus North Central. It broke the state record for strikeouts in a seven-inning game, according to a press release announcing Shellhorn’s Gatorade honor.
