George Fant is keeping his job at left tackle.
The undrafted rookie and former college basketball player is slated to remain the Seattle Seahawks’ starter at left tackle, despite original starter Bradley Sowell expected to return from injury this week.
Fant came into the lineup during the fourth quarter of Seattle’s 6-6 tie against the Arizona Cardinals in Week 7, replacing Sowell after Sowell suffered an injury that turned out to be a sprained MCL in his right knee. Fant struggled initially, but he’s started each of the past three games and made strides. On Wednesday Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said Fant had no missed assignments in last Sunday’s 31-24 victory over the New England Patriots.
Sowell, who started the first six games of the season after signing as a free agent during the offseason, is expected to be available this week. However, after practice Seahawks offensive line coach Tom Cable said that instead of Fant and Sowell competing for the left-tackle spot, Sowell is instead competing with Garry Gilliam at right tackle, meaning Fant will remain in the starting lineup.
“We’re competing at right tackle with Garry and with Brad,” Cable said. “George continues to grow. What we’re trying to do, it’s obvious I think, is get the best five guys on the field. That means mentality, doing it right, the right mentality and going for it every down.”
