FRANKFURT — Germany’s ice hockey team qualified for the Vancouver Winter Olympics by edging Austria 2-1 on Saturday.

The victory guaranteed that Germany will top the four-team qualifying tournament in Hannover where only the winner advances. Germany beat Japan 7-1 in its opening match and will top the pool no matter what happens in its last game on Sunday.

Austria, which beat Slovenia 4-3 in overtime in its opener, dropped to 1-1.

Japan is 1-1 after beating Slovenia 5-4 on penalties.
